Cybercriminals are intensifying their efforts across Australia, exploiting weaknesses in technology and security practices to launch increasingly sophisticated attacks. Ransomware incidents, data breaches and the use of malware to harvest personal and corporate information have all continued to rise, placing both individuals and organisations under sustained pressure.
Confirming these increases in cybercrime, the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has just released their Annual Cyber Threat Report 2024-2025
In FY2024–25, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recorded over 42,500 calls to the Cyber Security Hotline, an increase of 16% from the previous year. The ACSC also responded to more than 1,200 cyber security incidents (up 11%), and issued over 1,700 notifications of potentially malicious activity, marking an 83% surge. These figures highlight a clear and growing trend: malicious actors are becoming more active, more capable and more persistent.
The rapid advancement and adoption of artificial intelligence is further transforming the threat landscape. AI tools can be leveraged by malicious actors to automate attacks, scale operations and identify vulnerabilities faster than ever before. As Australian businesses integrate AI to enhance productivity and innovation, they must do so with a strong focus on security, governance and risk management.
Among businesses of all sizes, the top self-reported cybercrime threats include:
- Email compromise without financial loss (19%)
- Business email compromise (BEC) with financial loss (15%)
- Identity fraud (11%)
With cyber risks escalating, the message is clear: vigilance, preparedness and secure digital practices are now essential elements of doing business in a connected economy.
